OCD is a thief. It will steal time from your waking and sleeping hours with relentless intensity. You will be all too familiar with this is you are a victim of this indiscriminate, slave driving condition.
What is OCD?
OCD is a mental health disorder that affects people of all ages and backgrounds. It causes intrusive and unwanted thoughts and is often driven by fear. The sufferer believes if they don’t carry out their daily rituals then something bad will happen. It also takes hold very easily. The more you ‘obey’ the habit the stronger it becomes and what can start out as an innocent rechecking of the door can quickly take over your life.
What are the symptoms of OCD?
- Fear of contamination by disease or infection
- Fear of harming yourself or others. For example setting the house on fire by leaving the cooker on
- A strong desire for symmetry or orderliness. For example ensuring all the labels on the tins in your cupboard face the same way
- Obsessive cleaning and hand washing
- Constant rechecking
- Counting
- Hoarding
- Repeating words
This is by no means an exhaustive list and it may be that OCD affects you in a slightly different way.
What can be done?
The good news is that hypnotherapy is very effective in managing OCD. It is a learned behaviour, and if it is learned it can be unlearned. By finding your way to this page you have taken the first step to addressing your OCD. In the initial consultation we help our clients understand why they have these unhelpful habits. By explaining how our brains work we start the process of removing the connection between the obsession and the behaviour. This is enhanced over the next few sessions as the client continues to take back control of their life.
